Sorry, Banana, but I'm gonna have to run you over in the posting order. ^^ (And thank you for your help, almighty Admin. XD) IC:
When Penny's eyes drifted to him, Corbitt locked gazes with her. She seemed almost to be teasing him, or egging him on. It could just be the song, or the atmosphere, or the adrenaline pumping through his veins, but whatever it was made his breathing shallower and his mind inflamed with what he was about to do. As Penny's eyes left his, he slowly got to his feet, took a deep breath, and strode away from the dance floor. He made a beeline for the bar. Making sure that the rich boy from the ranch saw him, he hesitated for a moment as though he would buy a drink, but then turned to Jenny, instead. Just as she looked up, he took one more step toward her, bowed, and offered his hand. "Would you favor me with a dance?" Jenny was shocked for a moment, and looked unsure how to respond. "My goodness, Corbitt!" she smiled slowly, taking his outstretched hand. "How could I say no to such a sweet offer?" A grin spread across his face as she lay her hand in his. He straightened, and began backing toward the dancers, saying "Come away, then" with a brightness to his eyes. At first he fell in with a common step, one that many other couples were dancing. His heart was already pounding, but when Jenny's eyes met his, it absolutely raced. There was nothing for it. "I know you're a good dancer," he said. "so I'm sure you can keep up." His attitude changed drastically, or at least his body language did. The dance he had been moved to remember was from one of his travels as a young man. The steps were quick, light, and made the heels of their boots click like castanets on the hard floor. His hips swung nearly as much as hers did, and they inevitably got closer together as they danced. As he heard the end of the song nearing and Penny's voice rang clear as a bell, he twirled Jenny, round and round, her skirts flying, and he pulled her close, and dipped her as the last chord sounded. He grinned at her smiling face, her eyes shining and her hair falling back from her face like strands of a golden sun. And then, in a twinkling, he set her on her feet, stepped back from her, bent, and kissed her knuckles in a silent thank-you. As he straightened once again, he gave her a mischievous smile and a nod in place of a bow. He turned away, fighting the urge to give her an impish wink, and began to make his way back to his table.

Jenny stood still for a moment, feeling breathless. That was the best dance she'd had in quite a long time, and she'd certainly never been treated the way Corbitt treated her. So courteous, yet aloof. She almost felt like following after him, or calling out to him, but just then she felt a hand on her shoulder. Spinning around she was met by Jim wearing a forced-looking smile.
"Have a good time?" he asked, clasping his hands behind his back.
"Oh... yeah. Yeah, I did." She couldn't help but glance back over her shoulder, watching him sit back down where he had been before.
"He, uh... he's here a lot, isn't he?"
"Oh... I s'pose so." Jenny made her mind snap back to attention, and to her current suitor. She grinned broadly, taking both of his hands in hers. "Why don't you go back and sit down, hon? I got tables to wait."
"Oh... that's right. Don't let me keep you, now." Jim nodded and squeezed her hands before reluctantly going back to the bar.
"Felt the need ta check up on 'er, didja?" Joe said gruffly, still wiping down the smooth countertop.
"I... well, I--" Jim stuttered, unsure how to respond.
"Gon' do tha' every time she dances wi' some feller?"
"I... well, NO... I..."
Back at the table in the corner, Carter sat staring silently at Corbitt, his expression unreadable. his eyes were shrouded by the shadow of his hat, and his arms were crossed over his chest.
"..... so." He said at length, "Have fun?"
OOC: XD!!! Oh, Carter.....

OOC: <<springs into action >D>> SNEAK ATTACK POST.
IC:
Penny's eyes widened a little as she saw Corbitt approach Jenny, and they widened even more as she watched them jump into a quick, complicated dance - she was reminded of a sort of part-mambo, part-salsa, part-tango. Impressive, she thought with an inner smile, as she wrapped it up the final verse of the song...
"Mid lightnin' an' thunder an' the downpour of rain, it's in come a bullet an' dashed out her brains." Her hands flew to imaginary holsters at her hips and she cried, "I sprung to my saddle with a gun in each hand, sayin', 'Come all you cowboys, let's fight for our band;' sayin', 'Come all you cowboys, let's fight for our life; these redskins has murdered my darlin' young wife!'"
She acknowledged the applause with nods and smiles and winks, then leaned over towards the edge of the stage to again consult with Patsy about their next song, thinking I'm proud of the boy... now we'll just have to see if he can follow it up...
* * * ((Don't know why I felt compelled to put the triple asterixs. Passing of time, I guess, force of habit XD))
Hours afterward, as the hour neared midnight, the Hoot an' Holler's few remaning patrons drunkenly stumbled out the doors, promising to return tomorrow if they weren't in too much trouble with their wives. Penny stepped out from the curtains, changed out of her performance attire, and cleared her throat sorely. "What a NIGHT," she sighed, rubbing her temples with her fingers.
"Mmm hm... lots of cleanin' up to do," mumbled Joe from behind the bar, sweeping up the remaining gold dust on the counter with a dirty old rag. "Y'all go ahead and clear out, I'll see ya tomorrow."
"Yeah; 'night, Joe," Penny replied tiredly, walking over to Carter and Corbitt's table, where Jenny stood waiting. "Let's get back to the house, shall we? I need a backrub."

"Oh, do ya?" Carter asked with his air of subdued, grinning interest. "Because I might know a man who could do somethin' about that." He put his arms around her middle, pulling her close for a kiss. "O' course, nobody got nothin' for free..."
Jenny stretched lazily, not paying any mind to the blatant public display of affection. "Yeah, a backrub sounds mighty nice tonight. I been dancin' so much I jus' need ta relax." She glanced over at Corbitt, wondering if he'd pick up her hint. She figured he would- he was pretty sharp; the only issue was whether or not he was too bashful. "Let's get home then. Night, Joe!" She grinned and waved to him, and he nodded and grunted in response.
The group made their way out into the chilly night air, Carter's arm around Penny's shoulders. Jenny paced herself so that she ended up a few paces behind them so that they could have a bit of privacy.
"So... you're a pretty great dancer." she said, trying to strike up a conversation with Corbitt. She really wasn't sure what she was doing with him, or what was going to happen between them. Sure, she was interested in him. He was a wonderfully sweet person, and he was attractive. She wasn't sure how he felt, though. He must have been attracted to her somewhat, but was it purely physical? Did he have any real feelings for her? And then there was the sticky matter of Carter in all of this.....
Well, there ain't no harm in flirting...

Corbitt neatly detached himself from the bunch as per usual at the night's end. He vaguely listened to Penny and Carter, though he didn't at all register what it was they were saying. Somehow it felt more appropriate to give them at least some mental privacy. It was Jenny's voice that captured his attention, though he forced himself to feign ignorance. There was no way in the wide heavens that he could give Jenny the backrub she sought, though he would have loved to. Corbitt stole a glance at the now safely-distracted Carter. When he'd come back from his little adventure on the dance floor, Carter had given him a look that he'd only seen once before. That one other time it had been accompanied by the barrel of a gun. Once they were out the door, Corbitt lagged out of habit, his eyes riveted on the star-spattered skies rather than the road. He'd always loved to watch the slow circling of the constellations, and knew all their names and seasons. Years ago he had learned to navigate by them, to tell the date by them and the time by the position of the moon, if the season was right. They were constant, unwavering, and they comforted him. He was pulled out of his reveries by Jenny's voice speaking a soft compliment to him. Tearing his gaze from one beautiful sight to another, he looked over and she was walking beside him. "Am I?" he laughed in reply. “Well, sure!” Jenny replied, smiling. “Most fellas who come in to dance with me don't know a two-step from a walk in the park.” Corbitt couldn’t help but laugh again. “Thank you, then. But I'm nothin' to you, I'm sure. You picked up a step I didn't even warn you of.” “Well...” Jenny began, looking at her feet to hide a grin. “I get a lotta practice.” There was a moment of silence between the two. A tightness was coming to Corbitt’s chest that he had to rid himself of, so he spoke for the sake of saying something. “Thank you for letting me dance with you.” He couldn’t help but let his eyes drift to her face as he spoke. There was no nervousness in it; she wasn’t looking at him, after all. For the moment, anyway. She brought her eyes back up, and smiled coyly. “Well, what kinda hostess would I be if I didn't?” she asked. Corbitt’s gaze snapped to what lay before him as those sweet, clear blue eyes lighted on him. He tried his hardest to keep a steady countenance. But he could not keep down a small smile as he began, “I didn't...” he stumbled over his words for a moment, but caught his balance. “…expect anything. If you hadn't wanted to, I wouldn't've minded.” His choked down phrase "I didn’t ask you as a bar girl, I just asked you,” rang in his ears. That was a close one, he thought to himself. Jenny didn’t seem to notice, and giggled. “Corbitt, honey, I'm just havin' some fun with ya! I wanted to dance with you.” His smile widened in spite of himself. “I am glad of that.” He replied, locking eyes with her for one electrifying moment. Suddenly, Penny's voice rang out from ahead of them, "Corbitt, if y'all don't pick up the pace, I'm lockin' you out when we get home." "Alright, alright!" Corbitt called back with a hint of laughter in his voice. He turned to Jenny. "We'd better catch up." She giggled again happily, and with a bouncy reply of “Alright. Come on!” she took his hand, and pulled him forward, toward the house. Forcing down a fierce blush, Corbitt let himself be pulled. Talk about cutting my nose to spite my face, he thought, and prayed that he wasn’t overestimating Carter’s gift to make a man awkward.

Penny, discreetly glancing over her shoulder every so often to observe the two, came upon the porch of the house and began to climb the steps. She'd of course been aware of Corbitt's attraction to her friend for some time now, but hadn't seen him act so openly on it until today. She had to wonder what Carter thought...
Pulling the house key out of her shoe, she unlocked the door and she and Carter stepped inside. After Jenny and Corbitt had gotten in, as well, she closed and locked the door and returned the key to its hiding place. "So I guess it's off to bed - or, y'know, to floor. Or couch." Laughing and grabbing Carter's hand, she cried "It's time fer sleep, that good enough?" as she made her way towards the stairs against the back wall leading to their room. "'Night, Jenny darlin'," she told her friend affectionately as she went, and then turned to Corbitt. "Goodnight, Corbitt - thanks for stoppin' by the saloon today. Hope you had a good time." With a brief knowing smile, she continued up the last of the stairs and through the door, shutting it behind her in Carter's face just to be a brat.
Carter paused for a moment, then said loudly "Well then, I s'pose I'll have to find someone else ta give that backrub to..."
The door opened again, and Penny's hand shot out, grabbing him by the front of his shirt and pulling him inside with a curt "Don't even joke." With that, the door shut again.

Carter grinned, happy to let himself be pulled into the room. "Oh, got yer attention, did I?"
After a bit more of their particular brand of flirting mixed with insulting, the two ended up on the bed, Carter rubbing Penny's back as she laid on her stomach. Carter would never admit that he was the kind of man to do such a thing, but behind closed doors he was remarkably compliant.
He had been determined not to bring it up, but after a few minutes he couldn't help but ask, "So....d'ja see Corbitt... dancin' with Jenny?"
"... hmm?" Penny responded minimally, her mind not really focusing on much.
"Oh... uh, well, Corbitt, he asked Jenny ta dance..."
Downstairs, Jenny had changed into her nightclothes and was sitting on the couch, happily chatting with Corbitt.
"An' then this one time she got me to throw rocks at 'em with her." she giggled, pulling her feet up to sit crosslegged. "O' course, she could get me ta do near 'nuff anythin' back then, so I didn' ask too many questions."

Corbitt laughed, trying to imagine Jenny and Penny as little girls, not to mention throwing rocks at Carter and Ben. It was sheerly ridiculous, which made it wonderful. He caught his breath and leaned on his hands, looking at her fondly as she rambled. There was something about her that always managed to get a smile on his face. He liked to smile. "They kinda got mad at us...." She continued with another giggle. "But gosh that was a long time ago! Seems like forever." A soft smile pulled at Corbitt's lips. "Time goes quick." he said. "For me, anyway." "Yeah?" she replied with a grin. "I think it's prob'ly that way fer most folks. Course, I wouldn't really know!" Corbitt shrugged. "I think it just depends. Always runnin' around, not really being in one place for long, I know time really moved, then. Maybe it'll slow down a little, now that you and Penny are letting me rest my feet a little." "I think a little rest now an' then's good fer ya." Jenny began. "An', well, I sure am glad you boys asked ta stay with us." A soft smile pulled at her lips. "I'm glad, too." Corbitt answered, unable to offer any other reply. His eyes once more lighted on hers, but somehow this time he wasn't embarrassed. Abruptly his thought process was interrupted by a weight on his shoulder and a familiar set of gently-blunt claws. Looking down, the creature known solely as 'the Lizard' was sitting there, looking like an emperor surveying his kingdom. "You're supposed to be outside." Corbitt told it mildly. Jenny giggled again. "If Penny catches sight o' that in here, she'll have a fit. Course, I doubt she's gonna be back downstairs till mornin'." "Yeah, but it's the principle of the thing." Corbitt said, carefully grasping the reptile around its scaly middle and getting to his feet. He spoke to it again; "You've GOT to learn to stay outside, you troublemakin' fool. Penny'll find a way to catch you one of these days, and then you'll be breakfast." Nudging the door open with his foot, he rather unceremoniously reintroduced the ambitious emperor to a landscape he might actually be able to conquer. Jenny laughed aloud--a clear sound--and pulled her blanket around herself. "Well, I jus' wonder what kinda daddy you'll be someday." She said suddenly. "What?" Corbitt reacted, giving her a wide-eyed look, with a crooked, confused smile. "Y'all are so strict with your lizard, I mean. All discipline, you are." Jenny said with her usual sweet smile. Corbitt laughed quietly, closing and locking the door. "That lizard has absolutely no connection with me, except that it follows me wherever I go." "Aw, you know I'm jus' teasin' you." Jenny said "Yeah." Corbitt replied, still struggling with the thought of being a father. He saw no reason to be a father, unless... He deliberately cut off his thought process. It could only lead to one place, and that once place would make his cheeks burn. "It's getting late." he said suddenly, to get his mind back to the present. "And at least you should get some rest." he added, making his way back to the corner of the room where he usually balled up to sleep. "I s'pose yer right." Jenny sighed. She laid down and snuggled into her covers, making Corbitt smile in spite of himself. "G'night, Jenny girl." he said softly. "'Night Corbitt..." Jenny answered. "Sleep tight." Corbitt closed his eyes, knowing he wouldn't sleep nearly at all. He had far too much to think about for that. But that was alright. He smiled again, and said "Sweet dreams."

Roused from her drowsy bliss, Penny smiled in spite of herself and looked up behind her at Carter. "Aw, that bothered you, did it?" Yawning a little, she sat up languidly, and moved herself so she was seated close next to him. "I figgered," she admitted, leaning on his shoulder. "But I've been thinkin' about it too, and even if it did mean somethin', Corbitt ain't such a bad guy for Jenny..."
Carter started, protesting "I-I didn' say nothin' 'bout bein' bothered... and besides, Corbitt's an outlaw! He can't.. I mean, it ain't like they're..." Looking conflicted, he stopped himself, then after a pause said "...I didn' say nothin' bout it, anyhow."
With another amused smile, Penny replied "'Course ya didn't. Anyway, I'm not sayin' it did mean somethin'. I'm just sayin', even if Corbitt's an outlaw... well, not all of 'em are all bad, are they?" She laughed softly, deciding not to press the subject much more. If this was the first clue of Jenny and Corbitt's interest in eachother Carter had picked up on (which didn't surprise her), it was probably better to let him think it over, himself.
