OOC: Okay, this is a closed thread so you can only join if you know you're invited. Sorry, but there's no room for extras in this one ^^;
IC:
The Hoot N' Holler sat very nearly in the center of town on a dusty street lined with shops and other establishments. Down the road a ways was the general store, and off in the other direction was a smattering of homes where most of the town's residents lived. Silver Creek was a small comunity but it was ever growing due to the supply of adventurous souls that sought their fortune out west. The town itself was named for a creek nearby that was thought to have a large deposit of silver in the bed, though years ago it had been determined that the little silver that had already been collected was the deposit in it's entirety. Still, people stayed loyal to the settlement, keeping an never-say-die attitude through all the hardships.
It was one such person who had come to the town at the very young age of four who was inside the Hoot N' Holler at that very moment, setting up for that evening's shift.
"Hey, Tobacca' Joe, where are ya?" the young woman asked, peering over the counter as if the bartender might be hiding back there. Her blond hair fell in ringlets and was partially pulled back behind her head. The blue and black dress she wore exposed her soft, lightly freckled shoulders and her legs were clad in fishnet stockings.
A large man with a bushy moustache and very little hair atop his head walked gruffly out into the bar from the back storage room, scratching his ample gut. "I'm here, Jenny."
"Oh, there y'are!" Jenny grinned and skipped over to him, giving him a hug. "Penny's backstage gettin' ready. It always takes her FEREVER, doesn't it?"
"Well, she ends up lookin' mighty nice." Tobacco Joe took his post behind the counter, beginning to wipe down the counter with a rag. ".... hey, are them boys comin' by tonight?" There was a thin quality to his voice that failed to disguise his displeasure with the people he spoke of.
"I wouldn't be one of "them boys", would I?" a voice came from the doorway to the establishment, and when the two looked up they saw a young man with short cropped blond hair leaning against the door frame nonchalantly, the brim of his hat tilted over his eyes.
"Oh, hi Carter." Jenny grinned and sat down on a barstool. "Is Corbitt comin'?"
"Yeah," Carter moved away from the door and looked up to expose deep blue eyes the same color as Jenny's, "He's on his way. Damn lizard held him up. I swear to God, if he doesn't get rid of that thing I'm gonna shoot it."
Jenny laughed. "Well, if you don't Penny's sure gonna."
Tobacco Joe stayed silent through the conversation, having promised that he wasn't going to be unkind to Jenny's brother and his "associate" despite everything that had happened. He wasn't going to forgive that boy for leaving his mother and sister when they needed him, but making Jenny unhappy was the last thing he wanted. So he kept his mouth shut and contented himself to polish the wooden countertop, for the most part ignoring Carter's presence in his bar.
OOC: Yeah, I just made up an name for the town on the spot : P If you guys want to we can totally change it-- I'm not attached to it at all. Take it away, mah peeps!

OOC: I guess I'll just post...was gonna wait for Zoe, but...I cannot resist! Besides, then Penny can make a grand entrance. ^^ IC:
From outside the bar there was the vague sound of a boots scuffling on the dry ground along with a few husky shouts and a slightly muffled word that those inside could only assume was a curse. After another scuffling sound and a loud hiss, a second young man, this one outlandishly dressed, stumbled inside, backing through the door. "And you stay out there or I swear to God I'll shoot you myself!" He slurred in his thick New Orleans accent. He turned to face the room. Looking disgruntled, he stalked forward and flopped into a nearby chair, his long, faded jacket swirling momentarily as he turned. There was a large claw-mark on his right cheek beneath his eye, red and raw. He was tall and thin, and his brown-shot-with-blonde-and-red hair was pulled back into a tiny ponytail at the nape of his neck. Despite this, most of his hair drooped into his blue-grey eyes. Although he was what could be called handsome, his face was unnervingly interrupted by a scar that went from beneath his chin to the tear-duct of his left eye. He brushed his hair away irritably, and touched the new-formed cuts. With a wince, he pulled his hand away, and there was blood on his fingertips. "Stupid lizard..." he muttered under his breath, and leaned back resignedly in his chair.

OOC: Oh, I WOULD wait for Zoe, but Jenny's worried about Corbitt!!!
IC:
"Oh, Corbitt, honey, lookit' you!" Jenny cried upon seeing the scratches on his face. Jumping out of her stool she grabbed the rag from a startled Tobacco Joe, rushing over to kneel beside the newcomer. She began dabbing gently at the blood, holding his face still with her other hand. "Are you okay?"
"Wha'd I tell ya? The damn thing's a hazard. I swear, one day it's gonna get you into a hell of a lot of trouble, and on that day I'll be there to say, 'I told you we should have eaten that thing when we were in the desert.'" Carter leaned against the bar on one elbow while Tobacco Joe produced a new rag from a shelf below, continuing to ignore his rowdy patrons.
"Oh, you hush, Carter." Jenny carefully inspected the cut below Corbitt's eye, dabbing at it a few more times for good measure. "Ya know, if you aren't careful, you could end up with another scar to match this one." She tapped a finger lightly on the line running down the other side of his face with a small grin. "You all better?"
OOC: GAH THE CUTE :3

OOC: Postin' time, yo. B) Time to be secksy!!
IC:
The curtains hung across the stage rustled as an arm emerged from behind them, pulling aside the heavy fabric and revealing a pretty young lady, her other hand resting on her hip. She had long brown hair, hanging in a braid down her back, and brown eyes set in a slender face which was currently painted with makeup. "Hey fellas - y'all come by to see the show tonight?" she asked, walking forward and letting the curtain swish closed behind her. Her dress, in her prefered colors of red and black, fit her shapely upper body like a glove and draped her legs - also outfitted in fishnets - to the ankle.
Tobacco Joe nodded at her as he wiped off a glass with a rag. "Lovely as always, Penny."
She smiled; a sideways smile, teasing, but nevertheless sincere. "Why thank you, Tobacco Joe," she said, sauntering her way to the edge of the stage. Looking down at Corbitt and Jenny, she laughed briefly, raising an eyebrow. "Battle wounds from your tussle with the lizard, huh? Well as long as it's not in the house." Finally she turned her gaze to Carter, saying merely, "Hey, outlaw..." and biting her lip.
Tobacco Joe cleared his throat softly and stared at the glass.

OOC: Like I told you, this might not be cohesive...sorry! X(
IC: Corbitt squirmed as Jenny tended to his cuts, making a face. "Jenny, stop it..." he protested halfheartedly before responding to his friend's remark. "I told you, if you can manage to kill that thing, go ahead an' eat it. Jus' don't come running to me when it poisons you." He fell silent and still as Penny strutted her way out onto the stage. A slow smile began to spread across his face. "I wonder what Carter thinks 'a that costume..." he thought in silence. "Nevermind, I don't wanna know." he revised. "Ow!" he exclaimed as Jenny dabbed at his cheek; it stung. He realized that the rag in her hand was now partially soaked with what could only be pure alcohol. "Jenny!"

Jenny looked surprized at Corbitt's exclaimation. "... huh? What?"
Carter rolled his eyes but stopped midway through the process as he noticed Penny standing on the edge of the stage. He took several long moments sizing her up, a slow smile creeping across his face. Tobacco Joe did his best to hide his scowl as Carter walked up to the front of the stage to look up at her.
"Well Ms. Penny, ain't you dressed up somethin' lovely." Carter wore a broad smirk and he rubbed the rough stubble on his jaw.
"Hmm? Oh, you do look purdy, Penny. I wish I could wear all them costumes like y'all." Jenny stood up and looked down at her own dress. "Oh well. I'm not the singer anyway!" She took one last look down at Corbitt, pressing a finger to her chin. "Does it still hurt? Here, I'll kiss it and make it better!"
Without a moment's hesitation she bent down and planted a kiss right next to the cut below his eye before jumping back up with a grin and skipping to the door. "I wonder when more people are gonna show up!"

Penny observed the kiss with mild caution - she herself wasn't incredibly opposed to the idea of Jenny and Corbitt as a pair; the only reservations she held came from the protectiveness nearly everyone who knew Jenny well felt towards her. But there seemed a lot to Corbitt that wasn't immediately apparent, and she knew that Jenny, too, was more capable of watching out for herself than they sometimes gave her credit for.
Drawing herself out of her thoughts, she watched Jenny bound over to the door, grinning fondly as she replied, "Give 'em another half hour or so. They've never kept us waiting long." She turned to stare again at Carter, lowering herself down so she was seated on the edge of stage. If there were to be any great obstacle as far as Corbitt and Jenny went, she thought, it would be him: the older brother. "I figured you'd like it," she said in a low, sultry voice, casting speculation on her two friend's future together aside for the moment. "Sorry, though - can't have you messin' up my face before the show." She wrapped her arms around his neck and winked.

Corbitt was very happy that Jenny drew away quickly after kissing him--it made it so she wouldn't see his reaction. He could feel heat rising to his cheeks, which he begrudgingly fought down. As she skipped away, he couldn't help but notice the way her curly locks caught the light. Clearing his throat almost imperceptibly, he turned away and attempted to compose himself.
His unsuspecting eyes were met with the spectacle of Penny wrapping her arms around Carter. Corbitt let out a hissing breath of air, muttered "it figures," and focused his attention on something else, or attempted to. He had absolutely no problem with the two as a pair. In fact, he was happy that they had become a couple. On the other hand... ah, nevermind, he thought. No need to spoil your mood before a show. He smiled, put his feet up on the table, and settled in to wait.
OOC: OH GOD THE SHORTNESS. >.<

"Is that right?" Carter inquired in a challenging tone. His hands slid onto her hips as he pulled her closer; Tobacco Joe averted his gaze with all of his might. "If that's the case, I guess there's no point in just standing around then." With a smirk he let go and stepped away from her, walking to a chair and sitting down.
Jenny peered out over the swinging doors at the street for a few moments before re-joining the group. "I s'pose youre right, Penny." she agreed, leaning against the counter. Smiling, she glanced over at Corbitt and saw the telltale sings of a lingering blush. She thought it was very sweet how he'd get so worked up over something so small; it meant that he didn't take things for granted.
She pulled herself up to sit on the edge of the bar, feet dangling below her lacey blue skirt. Her gaze drifted to Carter for a moment before resigning to her own lap. Having Carter around had been a mixed blessing because although she loved him and missed him while he was gone, he was a fugitive in hiding and he didn't really do much to help around the house. Still, he made Penny happy and that was very important. It was also nice to have a friend like Corbitt-- he must have been the only real gentleman she'd known. They'd had some lovely conversations in the past to while away the time, which wasn't something she'd done with anyone but Penny.
He's real nice... I wonder what he thinks of me.

A look of surprise flickered across Penny's face, but she quickly recovered, pursing her lips bemusedly. "You are SUCH a brat," she scolded, sliding down off the stage and hustling over to where he sat in order to whack him in the arm. "Since when has that line ever stopped you?" With a sharp sigh of breath and a roll of her eyes, she turned her back to him and walked away, her hips swinging exaggeratedly to and fro. "Fine," she said without turning her head, "if you're gonna walk away from me..." she came to the barcounter where Jenny was perched and sat on a stool next to her, primly crossing her legs. "Now how's it feel?" She grinned widely, placing her folded hands on her knee.

OOC: it would make far more sense you for to post, Ashley, before I do so that Carter and Penny's exchanges are not constantly interrupted by Corbitt's inner monologue. But I'm going to post anyway, so you can't harass me about it later. XD
IC: Corbitt continued to ignore the blatant flirtation, letting his mind drift. His inner eye brought him to places he had been long ago, almost long enough that he did not remember them clearly. First, ropes, and a wooden banister through a thick fog...no, rigging...a sailing ship. There was the sudden roar of the sea on the rocks, and a massive cliff loomed before him. The scene changed. Merciless sunlight, a dirt track road; a man playing a metal drum, a woman in a bright skirt dancing. And again... A thick jungle, the air heavy and full of moisture. The buzz of insects was shocking, all of them falling eerily silent as the sky overhead filled with sudden light and sound. The heavens let loose their fury and torrential rain turned the ground at his feet into a river. Yet again the image faded. Then, a great city, all in celebration. White stone buildings on shining white beaches, the pure blue water lapping at the feet of festival-goers, emerald and gold dancing over those reveling in the shade of the olive-trees. And then, much, much further back, fireflies dancing in an inky summer sky, and a woman's voice singing...singing...
Corbitt snapped out of his memories, looking around. Realizing that he had not drifted away for very long, as he had feared, be settled back into his chair. A small smile came to his lips. When he'd glanced up, his eyes had settled on Jenny. Jenny. Such a sweet girl...and much smarter than most people gave her credit for. He shook his head. Don't be a fool, he told himself. You're an outlaw. She's not going to be thinking about you.

OOC: This thread seems to be going nowhere slowly, so I'm gonna move things along.
"Hmm, suit yourself little miss. I'm happy to sit here, mindin' my own business and not messing up yer face." Carter had an ironic grin on his face as he leaned back in his seat and adjusted his hat. "Wouldn't want to be a bother, after all."
"Oh Carter!" Jenny rolled her eyes at him and leaned back on the palms of her hands. Just then a group of about five men entered through the swinging doors, all talking raucously with each other.
"Welcome fellas'." Tobacco Joe grunted, nodding at them.
"Oh, there y'all are! You boys kept me waitin' ya know." Jenny hopped off the counter and wagged a finger at them sweetly. It was time for her to get to work.
"Dreadful sorry, Jenny." one of the men said to her, taking off his hat. "We was runnin' late at the mill."
"Aw, now don't be sorry. Sounds like ya had a rough day. You know what I think might cheer y'all up?" Jenny's eyes sparkled as she worked her magic. "A round o' whiskey!"
The men all nodded and added in words of agreement as the shuffled off to find a place to sit.
"Yeh, sounds good."
"Need me a drink."
"Tha's right, Jenny."
"Okay, I'll get those fer you boys. Just sit down and take a load off." She grinned happily and bounded up to the counter. "You heard the boys, Joe: a round o' whiskey!" She winked at him slyly. Jenny was the master of getting men to buy drinks, and not just for themselves. She'd charmed many a patron into buying a drink for herself, unknowingly just buying her a glass of colored sugar-water. Cheap to make, but just as expensive to purchase as a regular drink.
"Comin' right up." Tobacco Joe pulled a bottle out from a shelf and began filling glasses.
The night was beginning.

Penny slid down smoothly off the stool, batting her eyes slowly at the patrons with a sly smile. "Welcome to the Hoot 'n' Holler, fellas," she purred, as she made her way back towards the stage. "We'll start the show real soon, just give me a minute to get my act together." Turning to Tobacco Joe, she instructed "Tell Patsy to come on out," referring to their pianist. As she passed Carter, she shot him a look that said 'this isn't over' before climbing the stairs at the side of the stage and disappearing behind the curtain.
OOC: Blah. Short. 9.9 Yeah, Yoko, Patsy's the pianist now. XD Hanna wanted a new character. So now I guess I wait...? XD
