EXT. FOREST, DAY.
CAPRICE: (opens her eyes slowly, seeing that the sun has risen, and sits up without much hesitation. As she yawns) Giacomo - wake up...
GIACOMO: (groans, rolling away from her)
CAPRICE: (amused half-smile) Come on; I know you're not a morning person, but we have to - (lays eyes on his open knapsack) ... uh...
GIACOMO: (is too determined to be asleep to respond to her)
CAPRICE: ... (takes the knapsack, looks through it and makes a concerned face. Drops it and picks up another, finding it completely empty.) ... Umm, Giacomo... (leans over him; very gently) Listen to my voice. ... Are you listening?
GIACOMO: (doesn't respond)
CAPRICE: I'm... going to assume you are. (pauses) ... I'm going to tell you something which may cause you to get a little upset. But... just remember: things could always be worse. Okay? ... Are you going to remember that?
GIACOMO: (still doesn't respond)
CAPRICE: ... (very quickly) We've been robbed.
GIACOMO: (suddenly sits bolt upright, rounding on her) WHAT?
CAPRICE: (offers knapsack with a hesitant smile) During the night...
GIACOMO: Robbed??! (he grabs the bag, searching through it desperately) Did they take everything?!
CAPRICE: Giacomo, please calm down; it's okay, it's all replaceable!! Not like these... (grins assuredly and holds up the stone/compass) Thank God they didn't take them!
GIACOMO: (jumps up, starting to pace and rant) Yes, thank GOD they didn't take your magnet and broken compass! We couldn't get by without those! No, we don't need food, or supplies, or money! Just so long as we have the magnet and broken compass!
CAPRICE: (watching him pace, her smile fading as he speaks, her raised arm falling to her side) ... It's not broken. (looks at the items in her palm) And it's not a magnet.
GIACOMO: (stops pacing) Yes, Caprice, that's what they are. Do you not realize that we have nothing? What are we going to eat?! We have no money, no shelter, nothing!
CAPRICE: It's an adventure, Giacomo, (looks back at him) some things you just can't predict.
GIACOMO: If it were up to me we wouldn't be out in the woods in the first place! If you hadn't tried to steal that stupid walking stick we could have stayed in an inn, and wouldn't have gotten robbed at all!
CAPRICE: (looks at her hand holding the compass and the stone; after a beat, sadly) This might not mean anything to you, Giacomo, but it means... everything to me. (head still lowered, looks up through her eyelashes) You don't have to come with me, you know...
GIACOMO: And leave you to your own devices? Lord knows what would happen to you if I wasn't here!
CAPRICE: (bristles a bit) Hey, I've managed on my own before - if you'll remember correctly, I beat you at cards.
GIACOMO: And last night it was me who got us away from the angry mob you provoked!
CAPRICE: Well... I'm going on to the next town. (a little resentful) And if you really think I need you that badly, then I guess you've got no choice but to come along.
GIACOMO: And what will you do for food? Beg?
CAPRICE: (moodily slides an ace of spades out of her sleeve)
GIACOMO: (sighs) Caprice, you're too reckless. If we're not careful we'll never.... we'll never find the rod.
CAPRICE: (... smiles) You mean... you believe in it?
GIACOMO: I don't know, Caprice. But right now, it's all I've got... all we've got. So it's what we're doing.
CAPRICE: (smile grows even larger) That's right, it's what we're doing!! (grabs his hand with both of hers) I knew I could count on you. Now... (pressing the stone and the compass into his hand) Which way next, fellow bold adventurer??
GIACOMO: Well, the road was back that way, (points a direction) so I guess we should start there to get to the next town.
CAPRICE: (exhasperatedly) No, no - look at the compass.
GIACOMO: (rolls his eyes) You know I don't know how you use this thing. You do it, if you must.
CAPRICE: (grins) It's quite easy. It'll work for you if you believe in it. (takes his hand again; stares at the compass, fiddles with the stone)
GIACOMO: (sighs) Please, Caprice, let's just go to the next town. I have to find something to eat.
CAPRICE: (tsks, takes the compass and the stone) You know you're going to have to try it yourself, eventually. (starts walking towards the road)
GIACOMO: I'd rather just let you do it. (following her)
((Again, a bit lengthy, but we had to let the whole argument play out. ^^ I know it's been said, but good gosh I love this set. Question: when Kate and Frank used the rod, did they travel through time? or did they just transport ahead to the next town?))
